„There is absolutely no need to have specific knowledge in order to recognise good wine.“
The rich history of wine in France, dating back to the 6th century BC, is as munificent as the abundance of French wines and varieties of vines. Most French wines are commonly made from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Interestingly, the most expensive French wines are made by mixing several varieties, to becomes a true masterpiece of alchemy. It is also interesting that, especially in the Middle Ages, monastic orders managed almost all the vineyards. So our thanks go to St. Martin of Tours for spreading not only Christianity but also for cultivating vines, without which today‘s French winery’s would not be producing an annual 7 to 8 billion bottles of wine.
Incredibly fascinating and diverse areas such as Alsace, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Southwest, Jura, Corsica, Languedoc-Roussillon, Loire, Provence, the Rhone and Savoy are customary locations for wine pilgrimages in France. French wines are usually referred to by the region where the vine is grown, whereas everywhere else in the world local wines are known by wine variety. The classification of French wine is in itself a little complicated and is based on the concept of „terroir“, which is an all-encompassing sense of correlative soil composition, climate and the landscape of each wine region. The question remains as to the importance of the winemaker who creates the wine.
