The charismatic James Bond boss - actress Judi Dench, actor - and this year above all fashion designer - John Malkovich, Coen Brothers films star John Turturro, the famous Korean director Kim Ki-duk, the icon of the Czechoslovak cinematography Magda Vášáryová, popular Polish director Jerzy Stuhr, movie reviewer Michel Ciment, phenomenal Balkan composer and musician Goran Bregović, Oscar-winning Hungarian director István Szabó, Miss World Tatiana Kuchařová and the new Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitová - all gathered at this year's 46th Film Festival in Karlovy Vary.
In early July the city was dominated by a lofty atmosphere, beautiful gowns and dazzling jewels, colorful billboards with projected film trailers, luxury cars, famous faces, as well as thousands of film fans who could not miss the beloved filmmakers rendezvous. This year, visitors had opportunities to see 199 movies from 168 male and 33 female directors within 413 film projections. Nearly 12,000 people purchased passes for the festival and altogether over 120,000 tickets were sold. Just over 25 movies had their international premiere in Karlovy Vary and for 21 of those it was their world premiere.
At the final ceremony, in the grand hall of the Thermal Hotel, an Israeli movie Restoration (Boker tov, Adon Fidelman) received the Award for the best movie - the Grand Prix - Crystal Globe. The movie offers a psychological study of contemporary Israeli society, starring the wonderful Sasson Gabbai. Winners in the acting categories were American actor David Morse for his role in the US-Canadian movie Collaborator and Stine Fischer Christensen for her role in the German movie Crack in the shell (Die Unsichtbare). The statuette for Best Director was awarded to the French director Pascal Rabat, the author of the movie Holiday by the Sea. Judi Dench received the Award for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema, Goran Bregovic and John Turturro received the IFFKV festival president's award.
Traditionally, The Karlovy Vary Film Festival has a rich cultural program as a part of its organization. This year was no different with some interesting fashion shows, concerts by leading Czech artists, fun parties and amazing fireworks shows included as part of the venue.
A specific mood comes to life in Karlovy Vary during the festival, which is definitely worth the experience. The next, and already the 47th festival will be held from the 29th of June to the 7th of July 2012. Will you consider the temptation too?
