According to legend, the story of whiskey begins with the arrival of St. Patrick to Ireland. The natives learned to distill a drink from barley, called "Uisce Beatha" - water of life. This unusual Gaelic word, pronounced "ishker-vahr"eventually became the English word "whiskey".
The leading Irish distillery "Macallan" was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid. By 1892, however it was known as the Easter Elchies, the name having been changed by the then new distillery owner, Roderick Kemp. The name change was associated with a mansion that once stood on the site of the distillery. Since 1996, the distillery has been under the ownership of Highland Distillers.
The success of this whiskey distillery is primarily attributable to the use of very small and bulbous traditional distillation boilers and also because of the fact that all products are aged in sherry casks. It is said that Macallan whiskey is made of velvet and silk. During production of the distillate the Macallan distillery uses the Golden Promise varieties of barley, which is known for its superior quality.
The Macallan Distillery produces whiskey aged 10, 12, 18, 21and 30 years. A rare 60-year-old is also produced. A 7-year-old is produced for the Italian market, an 8-year-old for the French and a 15-year-old for the American market. Among the most interesting specialties include Macallan 1874, which is a relic bottle from 1874 which was rescued from a boat wreck in 1995. Another specialty as an 8-year-old Macallan "As We Get It" or the 12-year-old "Private Eye" Macllan 1961 which commemorates the 35th anniversary of the satirical magazine Private Eye, or 50-year-old Macallan 1949 Millennium presented in crystal decanters with a copper-made sign made from past stills.
